Idea Group’s i‑ROOF brand achieved a remarkable international milestone by participating in The Big 5 International Building & Construction Show, held from 26 to 29 November 2017 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, UAE. This exhibition is one of the largest and most influential construction events in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, attracting over 60,000 visitors and more than 2,500 exhibitors from across the globe. i‑ROOF’s presence at Sheikh Saeed Halls, Stand BC‑224, marked the brand’s official entry onto the world stage.

The Big 5 serves as a hub for architects, engineers, developers, contractors, and procurement specialists seeking innovative building solutions. Being shortlisted to exhibit here was, in itself, a testament to the world‑class quality and innovation that i‑ROOF represents. Idea Group’s delegation, consisting of senior management, product engineers, and marketing specialists, presented the full range of i‑ROOF UPVC roofing tiles, including the newly launched ASA‑enhanced series and the classic Spanish‑style profiles that had already taken the Sri Lankan market by storm.

Showcasing South Asian Manufacturing Excellence
The i‑ROOF stand was a vibrant, thoughtfully designed space that highlighted the brand’s core strengths: aesthetic versatility, durability, and eco‑friendliness. Large‑scale mock‑ups demonstrated the interlocking installation system, while live thermal camera demonstrations illustrated the superior insulation properties compared to metal and clay. A looping video presentation took visitors on a virtual tour of the Biyagama mega‑factory, showcasing the advanced European extrusion and moulding technologies that drive i‑ROOF’s production. Attendees were able to handle the product first‑hand, feeling its light weight and examining the textured, matte‑finish tile surface.

Throughout the four‑day event, the stand attracted a steady stream of high‑calibre visitors. Procurement officers from construction conglomerates in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar expressed keen interest in i‑ROOF’s suitability for Middle Eastern climates — specifically its UV resistance, colour retention under extreme heat, and lack of corrosion caused by sandy winds. Several regional distributors initiated discussions around exclusive dealership agreements, recognising the potential for a polymer roofing solution in markets that traditionally relied on heavy, heat‑absorbing clay and concrete tiles.

Knowledge Exchange and Global Benchmarking
Beyond commercial opportunities, The Big 5 provided an invaluable learning platform for the i‑ROOF team. Representatives attended technical seminars on sustainable construction, green building codes (such as Estidama and LEED), and the growing demand for lightweight building materials in high‑rise structures. Insights gathered at these sessions directly informed subsequent product development, including the introduction of enhanced ventilation ridges and improved installation clip systems tailored for multi‑storey apartment blocks.

One of the most memorable moments came during an informal interaction with a British architectural consultant specialising in tropical resorts. After inspecting the i‑ROOF profile, he remarked, “This is exactly the kind of material the Maldives and Seychelles have been searching for. It solves the rust problem of metal and the weight problem of concrete, all while looking premium.” Such feedback validated Idea Group’s long‑held belief that Sri Lankan engineering can meet, and even exceed, global standards.

Strengthening Brand Credibility at Home
The participation at The Big 5 also had a profound impact on i‑ROOF’s brand perception in its home country. News of the international exhibition spread through local construction magazines and social media, generating significant buzz. Sri Lankan architects who had previously viewed polymer roofing as a purely local product began to re‑evaluate their stance, now considering i‑ROOF as a globally benchmarked solution suitable for their most prestigious projects. Within months of the exhibition, i‑ROOF was specified in a string of luxury villas along the southern coast, a high‑rise apartment complex in Colombo, and an eco‑resort in the Knuckles Range — projects that may have been hesitant to adopt polymer before the Dubai showcase.

Looking Forward
Idea Group views the Big 5 Expo as the beginning of a sustained internationalisation strategy. In the following years, i‑ROOF expanded into East Timor and explored opportunities in several Indian Ocean island nations. The Dubai experience reinforced the company’s commitment to continuous innovation, rigorous quality control, and environmentally responsible manufacturing — values that remain at the heart of Idea Group’s mission.

For i‑ROOF, The Big 5 was more than an exhibition; it was a declaration that Sri Lankan building materials have arrived on the global stage, ready to compete and collaborate with the best in the world.
