In a significant step towards bridging the skills gap in Sri Lanka’s construction sector, Idea Industries Limited — a fully‑owned subsidiary of Idea Group — signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka (VTA) on 18 September 2024. The agreement, formalised at the VTA head office in Nugegoda, aims to modernise technical training in aluminium fabrication and wood craftsmanship, two high‑demand trades that are critical for the country’s infrastructure and housing development ambitions.
The MOU was signed by VTA Chairman Mr. S. Kumar Rajapaksha and Idea Industries CEO Ms. Dihani Weerasrathna, in the presence of senior officials from both institutions, media representatives, and a group of current VTA trainees who will be among the first beneficiaries of the new curriculum.
Addressing a National Skills Shortage
Despite significant investment in large‑scale construction projects — both public and private — Sri Lanka has long faced a shortage of skilled craftsmen in specialised fields like precision aluminium work and modern wood joinery. Many workers enter the industry with only informal training, which limits their earning potential, job security, and ability to meet international quality standards. This MOU directly targets that problem by establishing a structured, industry‑aligned training programme that blends theoretical knowledge with hands‑on practice.
Under the agreement, Idea Industries will provide state‑of‑the‑art equipment, raw materials (aluminium profiles, glass, sealants, wood sections), and experienced master trainers to selected VTA centres across the country. The initial phase will cover five VTA centres in strategic locations: Colombo, Biyagama, Galle, Kurunegala, and Batticaloa. Idea Industries will also assist in redesigning the existing curriculum to incorporate modern techniques such as thermal break aluminium window fabrication, CNC‑assisted wood carving, and automated cutting and milling.
Creating a Pipeline of Industry‑Ready Professionals
What makes this partnership truly unique is its focus on employability. The programme includes a paid apprenticeship component, where top‑performing students will be offered on‑the‑job training at Sivilima showrooms and factory outlets. Upon successful completion, trainees will receive a nationally recognised NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) certificate, with a guaranteed interview opportunity at Idea Group’s various subsidiaries or with its network of approved contractors.
Ms. Weerasrathna emphasised the win‑win nature of the collaboration: “As a company that relies on skilled hands to transform raw aluminium into elegant doors and windows, and rough timber into polished furniture, we understand the value of craftsmanship better than anyone. This MOU is not just corporate social responsibility — it is an investment in our own future talent pool. We are nurturing the next generation of Sivilima craftsmen and women who will build Sri Lanka for decades to come.”
A Proven Track Record of Skills Development
This is not the first time Idea Group has partnered with educational institutions. Sivilima, in particular, has a long history of conducting free community workshops and mobile training clinics, teaching thousands of rural masons and carpenters modern techniques. The VTA MOU represents a formalisation and scaling‑up of those grassroots efforts, backed by the authority of the nation’s premier vocational training body.
VTA Chairman Mr. Rajapaksha noted: “The private sector has a crucial role to play in making vocational education relevant and attractive to Sri Lanka’s youth. Idea Industries brings world‑class expertise and a deep understanding of market needs. Together, we will produce graduates who are not just certificate holders, but immediately productive professionals ready for the global market.”
Looking Ahead
With the MOU signed, equipment procurement and curriculum finalisation will begin immediately, with the first intake of trainees expected by January 2025. The programme aims to train at least 500 students per year, significantly elevating the standard of aluminium and wood craftsmanship across the nation. Idea Group views this partnership as a key pillar of its long‑term commitment to nation‑building — proving once again that a responsible corporate citizen measures success not only in financial terms, but in the lives it uplifts and the skills it nurtures.
